Horsedown Farm

A three-sided group of farm buildings set on an elevated site of extraordinary beauty framed by beech woodlands, over-looking the Meon Valley. With one side forming a home (formerly terraced worker’s cottages) and two empty barns enclosing a courtyard space, our brief is to connect all three buildings to make a single residence.By imposing a square geometry over the loose courtyard form, we create a new, coherent form that provides a rigour for new corner junctions and landscape. A series of new lime-rendered walls enclose garden, court and corner links. The former cottages are stripped out internally of all floors and walls and reorganised a series of four, double-height bedrooms with mezzanine bed galleries. The main flint-built barn is converted to a new dramatic living space with to one end, a mezzanine study space over a kitchen. The smaller barn is converted to a master bedroom suite.
