Starworks consented

Starworks - a nine-unit housing scheme in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty - has obtained planning consent after lengthy negotiations with planners.

JPA obtianed planning consent for the existing two houses on the site - Star & Mill Cottages - back in 2008. Permission for change of use from B1 commerical to residential will see the construction of seven additional houses across the 1.9 hectare site at Stoke Row, in the Chilterns.

Hind House in Stella

The Hind House featured in the Sunday Telegraph's fashion magazine 'Stella' on 30 October 2011.

The RIBA award-winning project, built on slender columns to protect it from the flood risk of the River Loddon, provided the backdrop to the Telegraph's photoshoot on structuralist Autumn fashion. The Stella article can be viewed here, and you can find out more about the Hind House itself here.

The Watson House is highly commended in the 2011 Wood Awards

The 2011 Wood Awards took place last night in Coventry, and JPA's Watson House was highly commended in the Best Small / Private Category. The Watson House was constructed using KLH structural larch/fir cross-laminated timber, with sweet chestnut cladding and joinery. The aim of the Wood Awards is to recognise, encourage and promote outstanding design, craftsmanship and installation in wood: more information can be found directly from the Wood Awards website.

2011 Manser shortlist

The Watson House has been shortlisted for the 2011 Manser Medal.

JPA's Watson House is one of six exceptional new homes that have been shortlisted for the 2011 RIBA Manser Medal, a prize recognising the best new house or major extension in the UK. The Manser Medal is the the UK's pre-eminent private housing design award. The objective of the RIBA Manser Medal has always been to encourage innovation in house design, to show how social and technological ambitions can be met by intelligent design and to produce exemplars to be taken up by the wider house-building industry. The prize is named after Michael Manser, former President of the RIBA, who is well known for his own steel and glass house designs.

Porter-Leake House Approved

The Porter-Leake House has received planning consent.

Planning permission has been granted for Porter-Leake House - an extensive remodelling and extension to a 1970s house in the South Downs National Park near Winchester, with outstanding views out over the the River Itchen valley and SSSI. JPA's proposals include the addition of a new master bedroom wing, an extended living area and significant improvements to the building's thermal performance and internal circulation.

Wing House Approved

The Wing House obtains planning approval on appeal.

Planning permission has been granted for JPA's Wing House. In his decision, the Planning Inspector, Mr. Anthony Davison, said that "the design of the proposed house represents an intelligent and sensitive response to the opportunities and constraints of the site" and the the proposed house "would possess considerable architectural merit". He went on to conclude that the "development would enhance the character and appearance of the area and would comply with [NFNPA's] Core Strategy Policies DP1, DP5, DP6, DP10 and DP11, CP6 and CP8".

Southampton Road wins on appeal

JPA's residential courtyard scheme for 142-144 Southampton Road, Lymington, has obtained planning approval on appeal.

Planning permission has been granted for the development of six detached houses with off-street parking and landscaping on the outskirts of Lymington. The three and four bedroom contemporary family homes, each with front and rear gardens, are arranged around a shared courtyard space set away from the street. Roofs are monopitch in zinc, upper storeys in western red cedar above plinths and garden walls in near white acrylic render. More information on the project can be found here.

2011 Downland Prize

The Pooley House has been shortlisted for the 2011 Downland Prize.

The Pooley House is one of 19 projects that have been shortlisted, out of a total of 70 entries. The Downland Prize is open to architects based in RIBA South or South East Regions, for projects anywhere in the UK with a total cost of under £1.5 million. Its role is to celebrate projects that best demonstrate the benefits of using an architect’s services. The shortlist can be viewed here and winning project will be announced in November.

River Road consent

Planning consent has been granted on River Road, Littlehampton, a residential development by Jane Wood.

The design inserts five new townhouses into the retained shell of the Victorian building, integrating old and new. Further details can be seen on the River Road project page.

2011 RIBA Awards

John Pardey Architects wins its third RIBA Award, this time receiving a RIBA South/South East award for the Watson House.

It was one of only two houses that received awards in the region in 2011. The full list of regional award winners can be seen at the RIBA South/South East website. The Waston House has also been long-listed for the Manser Medal, which recognises the best new house or major extension in the UK. The shortlist for the Manser Medal will be published on 8 September 2011, with winner announced on 10 November 2011.

Dominic Bradbury writes ‘Natural Selection’ - English architect John Pardey’s easy style of modernism is the perfect match for a country setting.’

The article asserts that JPA’s houses ‘are subtle, sophisticated buildings, grounded and integrated into the landscape, inspired by the natural aesthetic of 1960s Scandinavian design.’ The article features two recently completed houses in the south of England in the Pooley House and Watson House.

JPA’s Hind House features in Dominic Bradbury and Richard Power’s new book ‘New Natural Home’ published by Thames and Hudson.
